The Erie Canal Volume One: Perspectives at 200
The completion of the Erie Canal in October of 1825 marked a seminal moment in the history of the United States and was hailed as an amazing engineering accomplishment. This story of progress and technological achievement is the traditional one, but the story of the Grand Canal is far more complex, and in some cases, far less positive.
As we approach the bicentennial of the canal’s completion, our latest publication, in partnership with the Buffalo Maritime Center, surveys a variety of perspectives on this complex historical event. Over 120 pages, authored by a panel of subject matter experts and lavishly illustrated, provide inspiration for further exploration as well as a model for the consideration of the many other complex events in our shared history.
